Starting Point School
In Bengaluru, members of The Family India have opened a school for slum children called ‘Starting Point’. These children receive quality pre-primary as well as primary school education here free of cost. The children are taught elementary educational skills such as sight reading, mathematics and writing. In addition, they also engage in extracurricular activities such as arts & crafts, and receive training on topics such as manners & etiquette, health & hygiene, singing & performing arts and many other subjects.
Members of The Family India organize regular “Equal Opportunity” programmes for children from underprivileged backgrounds. -- In other words, we strive to create opportunities for disadvantaged kids to enjoy the same educational/recreational events that their peers from better socio-economic strata get to regularly partake of.
“It wasn’t their fault that they spent the first 5 years of their lives in prison and the next 10 in foster care. But it will be our fault if, as society, we don’t make it possible for them to succeed in life.” – About the children of prison inmates
There is a great need for effective character education programmes in Indian schools. The Family India has responded to this elementary need by putting together a unique library of books and audio visual materials for children called ‘Tools for Schools.’ This library consists of DVDs, Video CDs, Music CDs, activity books and storybooks teaches children universal moral values and life skills in an effective and entertaining way.
