Starting Point School

In Bengaluru, members of The Family India have opened a school for slum children called ‘Starting Point’. These children receive quality pre-primary as well as primary school education here free of cost. The children are taught elementary educational skills such as sight reading, mathematics and writing. In addition, they also engage in extracurricular activities such as arts & crafts, and receive training on topics such as manners & etiquette, health & hygiene, singing & performing arts and many other subjects.

Creating Equal Opportunities

Members of The Family India organize regular “Equal Opportunity” programmes for children from underprivileged backgrounds. -- In other words, we strive to create opportunities for disadvantaged kids to enjoy the same educational/recreational events that their peers from better socio-economic strata get to regularly partake of.

It wasn’t their fault that they spent the first 5 years of their lives in prison and the next 10 in foster care. But it will be our fault if, as society, we don’t make it possible for them to succeed in life.” – About the children of prison inmates

The Family India has been working with the children of women prison inmates since 1993. These children once lived with their mothers inside prison. At 5 years of age, they were required by law to move to foster care facilities. We have continued to provide these children with emotional, educational and community support.

The ‘Tools for Schools’ sponsorship programme

There is a great need for effective character education programmes in Indian schools. The Family India has responded to this elementary need by putting together a unique library of books and audio visual materials for children called ‘Tools for Schools.’ This library consists of DVDs, Video CDs, Music CDs, activity books and storybooks teaches children universal moral values and life skills in an effective and entertaining way.

‘Tools for Schools’ is the result of nearly 15 years of research and development work by childcare experts from around the world who pooled their energies and skills to find an effective answer to the question that is posed by every teachers, parents, psychologists, and caregivers – “How can we teach children good values in a powerful, effective and unforgettable way?”
