On May 25th, 2009, Cyclone Aila smashed into the coast of West Bengal. 5.1 million people were displaced by the storm. 300,000 homes were destroyed. 270,000 were damaged. Members of The Family India are helping to rehabilitate the survivors.
Here is a brief, first-hand report from our Relief and Rehabilitation Team
“It would appear that the fury of the sea has all but displaced the dwellers on the land! We are working in 5 villages with over 1000 families in the Sunderbans, about two hours away from Kolkata. Our team has delivered relief supplies of 200 tarpaulins, 200 kilos of soya food, soap, sheets, clothing to them. With the monsoons, people are concerned that things could get worse but are struggling to rebuild their mud houses and rebuild their lives. These people urgently need tarpaulin sheets, sleeping mats, andcooking utensils.”
Please help to make our ongoing relief efforts possible."
