On September 30, 1993, a killer quake measuring 6.2 on the Richter Scale 8000 people and injured 16,000 in Latur and Osmanabad. Teams from The Family India worked along with the Indian Red Cross in many of the 52 affected villages.
Along with distributing relief supplies, our team carried out an extensive hospital visitation programme where they provided emotional counselling to the victims and their families. Children are often amongst the worst affected in a natural disaster and need extra care at this time.
Besides interacting with the children, The Family India also organized a special seminar for 460 school teachers from 61 villages in Latur with a focus on training then to help children move past the trauma they had experienced. (This was, incidentally, the first training seminar they had ever attended and the first time ever gathered together at a common forum)
