In the wake of the 2001 earthquake which decimated Bhuj, Bachau, Anjar and other parts of western Gujarat, our relief teams cared truckloads of relief supplies and distributed them at the worst affected areas.
Over a period of four months, our teams then helped to set up 12 makeshift schools in Naliya, one of the westernmost districts of Gujarat affected by the quake and distributed school kits to children in 12 villages there. School children in Delhi personally packed over 2000 school kits for their counterparts in Gujarat. These kits contained notebooks, pencils, colours, crayons and other stationery items.
For the next 6 years, a team from The Family India, Mumbai, continued to do follow-up programmes with earthquake survivors in Bhuj. These included medical camps, educational programmes for schools, hospital support programmes andvalue education initiatives for children.
